What is the difference between a Paramedic & EMT?

At Beaufort EMS, we have a team of both EMTs and paramedics. Contrary to popular belief, however, the two are not the same.

While both EMTs and paramedics provide life-saving pre-hospital emergency care, paramedics undergo more extensive training and are able to perform more advanced procedures, deliver a wider range of medications, and can provide advanced airway care.

Does Beaufort EMS provide non-emergent ambulance transport services?

No. Beaufort EMS is a 911 ambulance only and does not provide non-emergent or inter-facility transport. Please contact your local ambulance transport agency for inquiries on non-emergent transport.

Does every EMS call result in a trip to the hospital?

While we recommend patients be transported to the hospital, as EMS professionals, we can neither force nor deny transport to the hospital - this is ultimately the decision of the patient.

Will I be seen faster at the hospital if transported via ambulance?

Calling 911 in Beaufort EMS's district will ensure that you receive fast, high-quality, life-saving pre-hospital care from our personnel. However, as an agency, we remain unaffiliated with local hospitals and thus do not have a say in how fast patients are seen once they are transported to the hospital.

Hospitals have separate triage protocols that determine care based on medical necessity, not time or mode of arrival.

What should I have ready to provide EMS professionals in the event of a medical emergency?

In order to provide the best possible care in the event of an emergency, it is helpful for EMS personnel to have access to the following information:

  • A list of current medications
  • Any allergies
  • Pertinent past medical history

It is recommended that you keep a list of the above information readily accessibly in your home, wallet, or car.
